I know you’re reading this stuff, well, at least some of you are, but you’re all replying to me by email rather than sharing your thoughts w/everyone else by posting your comments on this blog.
Well, Ken asked a very cogent question in response to yesterday’s newsletter re how physical activity appeared to increase telomere length. Specifically, he wanted to know if there was any relationship btwn hGH & telomeres since exercise increases hGH . . .
Ironically enough, a prepublication release in mid-October looked at this very question. At the time, I was distracted by CHF studies, so I’m glad Ken reminded to address this issue.
The authors looked at 2744 elderly Swedish men avg 75.5yo analyzing their telomere lengths and comparing them to their IGF-1 levels. Even after adjusting for the usual multiple covariates, they concluded that higher IGF-1 is associated w/longer telomeres. Notice that I said “associated” as this was a purely observational study. But put it together w/yesterday’s study looking at physical activity and what we already know about the relationship btwn physical activity and hGH, and I believe the relationship is closer to causative rather than just associative.
Take a look at these two studies and the older ones, too, demonstrating a link btwn physical activity & telomere length and come to your own conclusion. Feel free to share your thoughts with the rest of us at www.cenegenicsfoundation.org/blog. Don’t be bashful!
And just to be crystal clear, there’s currently no indication to prescribe hGH just to theoretically lengthen someone’s telomeres. Yes, you can prescribe hGH for an approved indication, but short telomeres is not one of the federally sanctioned diagnoses.
